The Wonderful Hat: Symbology and power of the Witch's Hat.
We all have at one time or another seen a witch's pointy black hat, which has invoked images of some old woman riding a broomstick across a full moon. Giving her that 'evil' look. But really it was an ingenious symbol of creativity.
Lets look at the base components that make up the hat:
- Its black. Black is an absorbing color that draws in light. It is worn by many because it is thought to absorb knowledge too. Also the color black in color magic is used for protection, and banishing. Not a bad color choice for someone who is working with spirits and energy.
- The Cone of the Hat. The cone in Wicca refers to The Cone of Power, and is seen as sacred space where energy can flow. Because its placed upon the head where the Crown Chakara is located, it would enhance mental powers and place it within sacred space, and allow magical thoughts to freely flow into the Astral Plane.
- The circle base of the hat. The circle has many connotations within the Craft. It is seen as the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, the Wheel of the Year, and the Sacred Circle. A Sacred Circle is a circle where magick is preformed. It is considered a shielded barrier between our world and that of the Gods. A place where energy can be built and flow. So having it as the base of the hat, the wearer is in a sacred circle as long as the hat is on.
So now that we've pulled it apart, we can see just how powerful of an item this thing was. You have the cone which is constantly projecting magical thoughts and acting as a super highway of spiritual energy. You have the circle which is placing you within a protective boundary and creating Sacred Space. The color black absorbing knowledge while repelling negative forces and energy. Pretty crafty I think.
Yet our dear Hollywood friends have twisted this wonderful thing into a symbol of horror and signifyer of fear.
